pittostrum or sweet pittosporum
|
Pittostrum is a small native tree which is sometimes thought of as an invasive or environmental weed. However in the home garden this plant has many advantages and should be kept:
- it offers excellent shelter for birds and possums, both of which will often make nests in these trees
- if you are in a bushfire prone area the dark green shiny leaves are generally more fire resistant than some of our other natives
- the fruit is a great native food source to possums, many birds and probably tiny bats
- the canopy can offer a resting place for birds moving from one bushland area to another
- these trees offer shade within your yard, sweet fragrance when in flower and privacy from your neighbours.
